Some people start to have signs before a migraine starts, called a prodrome. These symptoms can appear a few hours or up to two days before a migraine starts. Up to 60% of migraine sufferers experience these symptoms. These symptoms may include constipation or diarrhea, mood swings, a stiff neck, and cravings for certain foods or beverages. Before or during a migraine, some people may also experience an aura, which causes changes in their vision and other senses. About 20% of people with migraine experience an aura. Aura symptoms include loss of vision, seeing flashing lights or spots, hearing voices or music, and feeling pins and needles in the arms or legs.
Use a heating pad or ice pack: Applying ice or heat to your head or neck can ease the pain. Do what gives you relief.
Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is very important. Always keep a water bottle with you and keep drinking water from time to time.
Do not take too much medicine: Taking too much medicine can also be harmful. Do not take painkillers for more than 10 days in a month, this can cause “rebound” headaches.
Avoid migraine-triggering foods: Avoid stale foods, alcohol, processed meats, chocolate or artificial sweeteners.
