'Do not fear anyone, do your duty fearlessly…', Kharge's open letter as votes are counted

Voting for seven phases of Lok Sabha elections has been completed. Counting of votes is going to start in a few hours from now. Meanwhile, on the eve of counting day, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has written a letter to bureaucrats and appealed to conduct the counting process without any fear and without any prejudice. The Congress President has issued this open letter to the bureaucrats of the country.

'There is no need to be afraid of anyone'

In the letter, he urged the officers to follow the Constitution and serve the country without any kind of fear, bias or malice. He wrote that there is no need to fear anyone. You should not bow down to any unconstitutional method. Do not fear anyone and perform your duties on the basis of merit. He wrote, 'Our dear respected civil servants and officers, I am writing to you as the Leader of the Opposition (Rajya Sabha) and the President of the Indian National Congress.

He said, 'The elections for the 18th Lok Sabha are over and the counting of votes will take place on June 4, 2024 i.e. today. I would like to congratulate the Election Commission of India, the Central Armed Forces, the police of various states, civil servants, district collectors, volunteers and all of you involved in completing this huge and historic task. Our inspiration and India's first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel used to call civil servants the 'steel frame of India'.

He said, 'It is important to underline the fact that the Congress Party supported Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Dr. Affirmative action was ensured not only by the Constitution framed by Rajendra Prasad, Maulana Azad, Sarojini Naidu and many of our inspirational founding members, but also by giving representation to the marginalised in the bureaucracy and civil society in our autonomous bodies.

The tendency to turn India into an autocratic regime

Addressing civil servants, the Congress president wrote, 'The last decade has seen a systematic pattern of attacking, weakening and suppressing our autonomous institutions by the ruling party. As a result, India's democratic values are being damaged. There is a widespread tendency to transform India into an autocratic regime.

Some have completely adopted his style of communication, his modus operandi and in some cases his political rhetoric. This is not their fault. This tendency to bow down to power with autocratic authority, intimidation, coercive mechanisms and misuse of agencies has become their way of short-term survival. However, it is an affront to the Constitution of India and democracy.

He said, the 'will of the people' is supreme and the people want the Indian bureaucracy to return to the same 'Steel Frame of India' envisioned by Sardar Patel, Teflon-coated by our strong constitutional principles that have stood the test of time. The Indian National Congress now urges the entire bureaucracy to abide by the Constitution, perform its duties and serve the nation without fear, favour or ill-will.

Do not fear anyone. Do not succumb to any unconstitutional methods. I wish you all the best with the hope that India remains truly democratic and the eternal ideals of our Constitution remain intact.
