Despite unbearable knee pain, world number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia defeated his young opponent in a five-set match that lasted four and a half hours to enter the men's singles quarterfinals of the French Open Grand Slam tennis tournament at Roland Garros, breaking the record of Switzerland's Roger Federer. Djokovic fell on his back to the ground early in the second set and it looked like he might be forced to quit the match, but he bounced back to beat 23rd seed Francisco Cerundelo 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7- 5, 6- 3. He will next face seventh seed Casper Ruud, who defeated 12th seed Taylor Fitz 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Djokovic defeated Ruud in last year's French Open final. The other quarterfinal will see Alex de Minaur face Alexander Zverev, who beat Holger Rune 4-6, 6-1, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2.
Djokovic, who has won the most 24 Grand Slams in men's singles history, broke Switzerland's Roger Federer's record of 369 Grand Slam matches by defeating Francisco. Djokovic now has 370 Grand Slam wins to his name.
