Paris, May 29 (HS). Serbian star tennis player Novak Djokovic started with a win in the French Open on Tuesday, defeating French wildcard Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4, 6-7 (7-3), 6-4.
Djokovic aims to become the first player in tennis history to win 25 Grand Slam singles titles at Roland Garros, where he has lifted the trophy three times previously.
Djokovic's 2024 results have fallen short of his usual high standards. For only the second season since winning his first ATP singles title in 2006, he has arrived at Roland Garros without reaching a final at any level.
Two-time finalist Casper Ruud also advanced with a straight-sets win. Seventh seed Ruud of Norway defeated qualifier Felipe Meligeni Alves 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
Women's second seed Aryna Sabalenka needed just one hour and eight minutes to reach the second round, beating Erika Andreeva 6-1, 6-2. Sabalenka broke world No. 100 Andreeva's serve five times and hit triple her opponent's winners to win her first career match against the 19-year-old. Sabalenka hit 27 winners in 15 games and made just 16 unforced errors.
