New Delhi, 6 December (Hindustan Reporter). The 7th edition of Smart India Hackathon (SIH) will begin on December 11 at 51 centers across the country. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will inaugurate this program virtually.
The Education Ministry said in a statement on Friday that SIH is a nationwide initiative that aims to provide a platform to students to solve some of the critical problems we face in our daily lives and thus inculcate a culture of product innovation and problem-solving mindset. Like previous editions, student teams will work on problem statements given by ministries, departments and industries or pitch their idea in the student innovation category against any of the 17 themes.
Over 250 problem statements have been submitted by 54 ministries, departments, state governments, PSUs and industries for SIH 2024. This year has witnessed an impressive growth of 240 per cent in internal hackathons at the institute level, from 900 in SIH 2023 to over 2247 in SIH 2024, making it the largest edition ever. More than 86000 teams have participated in SIH 2024 at the institute level and around 49,000 student teams (each consisting of 6 students and 2 mentors) have been recommended by these institutes for the national level round. The Grand Finale of SIH also serves as a ground for open interaction between officials of various ministries, government departments and students, teachers of educational institutions.
The challenges identified and addressed cover 17 key areas and themes related to areas of national importance and national priorities. These are healthcare, supply chain and logistics, smart technology, heritage and culture, sustainability, education and skill development, water, agriculture and food, emerging technology and disaster management.
SIH has deeply impacted India’s innovation landscape, empowering students and professionals to tackle real-world challenges. A key element ensuring this success is the SIH Alumni Network, which, through its well-designed portal (https://alumni.mic.gov.in/), has demonstrated transformative results. The stories are documented with ease. To date, SIH alumni have founded over 100 startups, many of which have a strong social dimension.
