DGP Rashmi dismissed, three names sought

Maharashtra DGP Case: Before the assembly elections in Maharashtra, the Election Commission has taken major action and ordered the immediate transfer of Director General of Police (DGP) Rashmi Shukla. The commission has immediately expelled Rashmini after receiving complaints against her by other major political parties of the state, including Congress.

Immediate replacement due to political party complaint

Acting on the complaint of Congress and other parties, the Election Commission has immediately transferred Rashmi Shukla. Besides, the Chief Secretary was also instructed to hand over his charge to the senior most IPS officer of the cadre.

According to sources, the Chief Secretary has also been instructed to send a panel of 3 IPS officers by 1 pm tomorrow on Tuesday for appointment to the post of new DGP of Maharashtra.

Who is Rashmi Shukla?

1988 batch IPS officer Rashmi Shukla became the first woman DGP of Maharashtra state. Also, he was appointed DGP on January 4 of the same year.

Earlier, he was serving as Director General (DG) in Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) on central deputation, he was scheduled to retire in June itself, but the government promoted him.

Then Rashmi Shukla's name was also dragged into the phone tapping case of Mahavikas Aghadi leaders. However, he has already got a clean chit in this case.

Known as a special officer of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis

Rashmi Shukla is seen as a special officer of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. He served as the Commissioner of the State Intelligence Department (SID). It is said that this post is given only to those officers who are considered close to power.

But in 2019, when the Maha Vikas Aghadi came to power, it replaced many officials who were considered close to the Fadnavis-led government, including Rashmi Shukla.

FIR lodged

Following his departure from Maharashtra, two FIRs were filed against him in February and March 2022, one in Pune and one in Mumbai, alleging that he had allegedly harassed Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, NCP's Eknath Kharge and state Congress president Nana Patole was accused. During the tenure of Fadnavis government, phones of opposition leaders were tapped.

Mumbai Police Commissioner made acting DGP

After the transfer, Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar has been given the additional charge of acting DGP of Maharashtra till the appointment of the new DGP. Along with this, the Chief Secretary has been instructed to submit the list of three senior IPS officers by November 5, so that the permanent DGP can be selected.
