Uttar Pradesh DGP Appointment: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has targeted the cabinet's decision regarding the appointment of Director General of Police (DGP) in Uttar Pradesh. He wrote on 'X' that, 'Will those who are taking care of themselves survive for two years or not?' The Uttar Pradesh government has cleared the way for the selection of DGP from its level.

A six-member committee will be formed to select DGP.

A six-member committee will be formed under the chairmanship of a retired High Court judge for the selection of DGP. The committee will include the Chief Secretary, a member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission or an officer nominated by him, besides the Additional Chief Secretary or Principal Secretary Home and a former DGP. ,

Akhilesh Yadav wrote on 'X', 'I have heard that work is being done to give a permanent post to a senior officer and extend his tenure by 2 years. The question is whether the people who have created the system themselves will run it even for two years or not. Is this an attempt to snatch the reins from the hands of Delhi?

This proposal was approved in the cabinet meeting

A cabinet meeting was held on Monday (November 4) under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. In this meeting, an important proposal related to DGP Selection and Appointment Rules 2024 was also approved.

DGP has not been appointed yet in UP

A permanent DGP has not been appointed in Uttar Pradesh for almost 3 years. After making the new rules, the government will no longer need the approval of UPSC for the permanent appointment of DGP. In 2006, while hearing a petition regarding the appointment of DGP, the Supreme Court had expected the state government to create a new system to free the police system from all pressures. After which the governments of Punjab, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have made rules regarding the appointment of DGP.

Uttar Pradesh has become the fourth state to make new rules for the appointment of DGP. The rules make it clear that now the DGP will be appointed on the basis of better service record and experience of the concerned IPS officer. Only those officers will be given preference for appointment as DGP who have at least six months of tenure remaining.
