The mythological and historical Dekuli Dham Sheohar, located in Sheohar district of Bihar, is soon going to become a major religious attraction for devotees and tourists coming from India and abroad. The fate of this mythological site is going to change completely with the construction of the ambitious ‘Ram-Janki Path’ being jointly developed by the Central and State Governments. After the construction of the grand Shri Ram Janmabhoomi temple in the holy city of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, the traffic of devotees going from Ayodhya to Janakpurdham, the birthplace of Mata Sita in Nepal, has increased significantly. To facilitate this cultural and religious connection, Ram-Janaki Path is being constructed rapidly, which will pass directly through Dekuli Dham in Shivhar district. The construction of this new four-lane highway will not only provide an excellent resting place to the devotees, but will also provide a new dimension and identity to the business, employment and tourism sectors at the local level.
Ram-Janaki Marg is not just an ordinary road or a national highway, but a very important corridor connecting the common mythological, spiritual and cultural heritage of India and Nepal. According to religious beliefs, this path largely follows the same historical route that was used when Lord Shri Ram went to Janakpur along with Maharishi Vishwamitra and his brother Lakshman in Tretayug, and when the entire procession returned to Ayodhya after the marriage. The ancient Dekuli Dham of Baba Bhuvaneshwarnath, situated on the banks of Bagmati river in Sheohar district, lies at the main center of this holy path. According to mythological texts and local beliefs, Parashuram himself had performed penance for Lord Shiva at this place and had established a huge Shivalinga. In such a situation, due to Ram-Janaki Marg being directly connected to Dekuli Dham, this Dham will prove to be the most important stopping point for darshan and rest for lakhs of Ram devotees traveling from Ayodhya to Janakpur.
After coming to the center of Ayodhya-Janakpur corridor, plans have been prepared on a large scale to modernize the basic facilities around Dekuli Dham. The work of beautification is being started rapidly by the state government and the tourism department to give a grand and attractive look to the temple complex and surrounding areas. Wide connecting roads, parking spaces for big vehicles, modern dharamshalas for the stay of devotees, clean drinking water and toilets are being arranged to reach the temple directly from the highway. Apart from this, ghats will also be constructed and beautified on the banks of Bagmati river so that devotees coming from far and wide can take holy bath here and enjoy the grand aarti in the evening. With the completion of this entire project, Dekuli Dham will not only emerge from a local place of worship to the international tourism map, but the tourists coming here will also be able to get world class facilities.
The construction of Ram-Janaki Path and development of Dekuli Dham as a major tourist hub has every possibility of giving a tremendous boost to the local economy of Sheohar and surrounding districts like Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur and Motihari. Increase in religious tourism will create many new employment opportunities for the local youth. There will be an unexpected increase in the income of small and big businessmen associated with hotels, restaurants, handicrafts, transport, worship material business and guide services. Apart from this, the creation of better road network will strengthen the connectivity of Sheohar district directly with Patna, Ayodhya and Nepal, which will give impetus to business activities in the area. Local residents and public representatives believe that with this much-awaited road project, Sheohar district, which till now was considered geographically backward, will now establish its new identity as one of the most prominent spiritual and business centers of North Bihar.
