The torrential rains in Delhi-NCR have once again exposed the system of the metropolis. The difference between roads and drains has disappeared and the entire area seems to have turned into a river. There is water everywhere, due to which normal life is completely disrupted. In pictures going viral on social media, luxury vehicles—including expensive cars like Mercedes and BMW—are seen floating like a ‘handcart’ or boat as they get stuck on the roads. People are forced to push their vehicles through knee-deep water, while many major underpasses and roads have become ponds, bringing vehicular traffic to a standstill.

System exposed, reality of ‘smart city’

This orgy of rain is not the result of just one day of rain, but it is the result of the poor drainage system that has been going on for years. From many posh areas of Delhi to Noida and Gurugram of NCR, the drainage system seems to be a complete failure. Due to non-cleaning of drains and problems of water logging, vehicles worth lakhs have been submerged in water. People are stuck in traffic jams for hours and the claims of the administration seem to be falling flat. Heavy traffic jams on the roads have further increased the difficulties of office going people. Local residents say that the same situation arises every year during monsoon, but only promises are made in the name of improvement.

Meteorological Department’s alert and challenges ahead

The Meteorological Department has still issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR, which clearly shows that there is little hope of relief in the coming few hours. There are also reports of power cuts and falling of trees due to heavy rains and water logging. The administration has appealed to the people not to come out of their homes if it is not necessary. Due to waterlogged roads, not only vehicles are getting damaged, but there is also a danger of accidents like electrocution.
