News India Live, Digital Desk: With the onset of winter in Delhi, the wind has once again become deadly. This morning, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reached ‘severe’ category, which has raised a big concern regarding health. The situation is even more dire in Anand Vihar, one of the most polluted areas of the capital, where the AQI has crossed 400. The thick blanket of smog all around has made it difficult for people to even breathe.

What is the meaning of ‘serious’ category?

When the air quality index goes above 400, it is considered ‘severe’. This level of air can badly affect even healthy people and can prove to be extremely dangerous for those who are already suffering from respiratory or heart diseases. Doctors say that staying in such air for too long can cause problems like eye irritation, sore throat, headache and lung infection.

Why did the situation worsen?

According to experts, there are many reasons behind the bad air of Delhi.

  1. Effect of changing weather: Due to falling temperature in winter, the air becomes heavy, due to which the pollutants get accumulated near the ground and are not able to spread far.
  2. Stubble Smoke: Incidents of stubble burning have increased in neighboring states like Punjab and Haryana. Since the wind direction is towards Delhi, all the smoke there is getting mixed in the air of the capital.
  3. Local Pollution: Vehicle smoke, construction dust and industrial pollution inside Delhi are also making the situation worse.

What steps are being taken?

In view of the worsening situation, the Air Quality Management Commission (CAQM) has come into action. Instructions may be given to implement the GRAP-III rules applicable under the ‘Severe’ category more strictly. This may include steps like banning non-essential construction and BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles. People are also being advised to avoid going out in the morning and evening, and if it is necessary to go out, then wear a good quality mask.
