Delhi Police on Tuesday destroyed over 10,600 kg of illicit drugs, worth over Rs 1,600 crore in the international market, at Biotic Waste Solutions.
Committees were formed to destroy drug quantities.
Delhi Police said in a statement that Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena was present when the illegal drugs were destroyed. The drug consignment destroyed included ganja, hashish, heroin, cocaine, LSD, MDMA, poppy, doda poppy, ketamine, injectable drugs and other psychoactive substances. Following the Supreme Court order, Delhi Police formed committees to destroy drugs seized from smugglers. These committees prepared a list of drugs seized between 1969 and 2024 in cases that had received disposal orders from the court.
2,169 drug smugglers were arrested
A Delhi Police statement said that till December 15, Delhi Police has registered 1,714 cases under the NDPS Act and arrested 2,169 drug smugglers. Assets worth approximately Rs 3.13 crore were seized in the financial investigation and confiscation proceedings were initiated against Rs 3 crore. Action has been initiated against 7 smugglers under PITNDPS, while cases are ongoing against 37 others.
More than 43,000 kg of narcotics destroyed since 2022
Delhi Police said that since December 2022, Delhi Police has conducted 4 major destruction initiatives in which more than 43,000 kg of narcotics worth Rs 4300 crore have been destroyed. Police further said that under the anti-drug campaign, Delhi Police has started a one-month campaign from December 1. According to the police, in the operation 200 schools, colleges, hostels, shops and hotels were raided and auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers were checked on the spot. Hostel wardens, school administrators and citizens are actively involved in awareness programs.
