The Union Road Transport Ministry has proposed to make important amendments in the Motor Vehicles Act. These include allowing settlement of motor vehicle accident claims within 12 months, allowing motorcycles to be used under contract carriage and commercial use.
This includes allowing contract carriage to aggregators like Rapido and Uber. Contract carriage is a vehicle hired to carry passengers. The existing law provides for contract carriage for all vehicles, but the new amendment will also include motorcycles. Some states have banned the use of two-wheelers for ride-hailing operations. Therefore, the law will be amended to allow commercial use of motorcycles as contract carriage. Fines on traffic violations will be doubled to hold drivers accountable for traffic violations and reduce accidents.
Emphasis will be placed on the safety of tourists
The government will emphasize on the safety of tourists. For this, the cab aggregators guidelines will be amended to include motorcycles. The 67 proposed amendments to be introduced in the winter session of Parliament will create a new definition for buses in educational institutions. Whereas light motor vehicles will be classified on the basis of their gross weight. For the first time, the definition will be fixed for three-wheelers. There is a provision to define a bus of an educational institution as a vehicle. Which consists of more than 6 persons excluding the driver and is owned or leased or hired by the institution for the transportation of students and employees.
