The Delhi High Court will today pronounce its verdict on Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's plea challenging his arrest in a money laundering case related to the Delhi Excise Policy scam. According to the cause list uploaded on the High Court website, Justice Swarnkant Sharma will pronounce the verdict on the petition at 2:30 pm on Tuesday. Apart from his arrest, Kejriwal has also challenged his being sent to the custody of the Enforcement Directorate.
The national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party has questioned the “timing” of his arrest by the agency and said it is a violation of the basic principles of the Constitution, including democracy, fair elections and equal opportunities. The ED opposed the plea and argued that Kejriwal cannot claim “exemption” from arrest on election grounds as the law applies equally to him and any common citizen.
The ED had arrested Kejriwal on March 21 in a money laundering case related to the excise policy 'scam'. The AAP leader was sent to judicial custody on April 1 after being produced in the trial court after his ED custody ended and is currently lodged in Tihar jail. The case relates to alleged corruption and money laundering in the formulation and implementation of the Delhi government's excise duty policy for 2021-22 and the subsequent repeal of that policy.
