Black gowns and caps are no longer required for graduation ceremonies at educational institutions in India. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Friday ordered central government-run medical education institutions to get rid of the colonial-era attire worn during graduation ceremonies.

This also includes institutions like AIIMS and INIS. This decision is in line with the outline of the Panch Prana Mission, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to free himself from the legacy of the colonial era and turn to Indian tradition. A letter issued by the ministry on August 23 said that the tradition of wearing black robes and caps in graduation ceremonies dates back to medieval Europe. This tradition was implemented during British rule in India. The ministry has directed educational institutions to design a new graduation dress code in accordance with the tradition of the state in which the institution is located. The government order states that the existing dress code is a colonial legacy. It needs to be changed. In recent years, there has been a demand to wear Indian dress in graduation ceremonies in Indian educational institutions as well. Black gown and cap are different from Indian tradition.
