Defending champion Alcaraz will start his campaign against qualifier Marc Lazzal

London, June 29 (HS). Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain will begin his campaign at Wimbledon against qualifier Mark Lazzal of Estonia. The draw for this grass court Grand Slam was announced on Friday.

The 21-year-old Alcaraz won the title last year defeating Serbia's Novak Djokovic in a five-set final. This year, he arrived at the All England Club with another major trophy after winning the French Open for the first time.

Lazal, on the other hand, has no experience of a Grand Slam main draw yet, having entered the tournament after defeating Australia's James Duckworth in the third qualification round.

Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, will face Czech Republic's Vit Kopriva in the first round, while world number 1 Jannik Sinner of Italy will take on German veteran Yannick Hanfmann.

China's Zhang Zhizhen, seeded 32nd, will face French qualifier Maxime Janvier in the first round, while his compatriot Shang Juncheng will take on former world top 20 player Cristian Garin of Chile.

In women's singles, five-time Grand Slam champion and world No. 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland may face a tough challenge from former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in her first match.

Defending champion Marketa Vondrousova's first opponent is Spain's Jessica Manero, while two-time runner-up Ons Jabeur of Tunisia will play Japan's Moyuka Uchijima.

Eighth seed Zheng Qinwen of China will face qualifier Lulu Sun of New Zealand. Zheng's best result at Wimbledon was a third-round finish in 2022. The Chinese player has made rapid progress since turning professional in 2022, reaching the final of this year's Australian Open before reaching the quarter-finals at last year's US Open.
