Paris, July 31 (HS). After a poor start for the Indian archery team at the Paris Olympics, Deepika Kumari finally raised medal hopes by securing her place in the Round of 16 of the women's individual archery on Wednesday.
Deepika started her day with a thrilling 6-5 win against Rina Pernat of Estonia and then easily defeated Quinty Roffen of the Netherlands 6-2 in the Round of 16.
In the match against Netherlands' Quinty Roffen, Deepika started with a bang and scored 29 points including two 10s in the first set, while Roffen scored 28 points including two 9s and a 10. Deepika took a 2-0 lead in the first set, however Roffen also made a brilliant comeback and scored 29 points including two 10s in the second set, while Deepika could score only 27 points and the score was tied at 2-2.
However, the tables turned again in the Indian's favour as Roffen missed the target completely, allowing Deepika to win the set easily 28-17 and take a 4-2 lead. A clearly frustrated Roffen found it hard to regain her momentum in the next set as Deepika won another easy set 29-23 to take the match 6-2.
