Decline in telecom sector slows down, Airtel adds new customers in October

Telecom Sector 1200

After the tariff increase in July, the trend of decline in the number of customers of telecom companies seems to be slowing down. October figures confirm that companies lost only 33 lakh customers this month. The special thing is that Bharti Airtel has registered an increase in its customer base after three months.

Customer data status in October

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released subscribers data for October 2023. according to the report:

  • Bharti Airtel: The company added 27 lakh active customers, which saw a positive change for it.
  • Reliance Jio: Despite losing around 37 lakh customers, it managed to add 38 lakh active customers.
  • Vodafone Idea (Vi): 7 lakh active customers were lost during this period.
  • BSNL: This government-owned company added 5 lakh customers.

It is clear from these figures that although the decline in customer base may continue, its impact is gradually diminishing.

TRAI’s relief for 2G customers

For the telecom sector, TRAI has announced a big relief for 2G service users and customers having two SIM cards.

  • Now Telecom companies will have to provide only voice packs to customers.which will make access to basic services easier and cheaper.
  • The move will be beneficial for the 30 crore 2G users who were currently facing expensive bundled data packs.
  • TRAI is going to issue guidelines in this regard soon.

Challenge of bundled data packs becoming expensive

A large number of people in India still depend on 2G networks. These consumers are usually forced to purchase bundled data packs, which include data along with voice calls.

TRAI had issued a consultation paper on the issue in July. After this, efforts are being made to provide relief to the customers by allowing voice-only plans.

New possibilities for customers

This change in the telecom sector can be a beneficial deal for the customers. This will not only provide better services to 2G users at lower cost, but will also give telecom companies an opportunity to keep their customer base strong.
