Samajwadi Party has made Mata Prasad Pandey the leader of opposition in Uttar Pradesh assembly. Tufani Saroj's name was also included in the race for leadership. But Akhilesh Yadav has announced the name of Mata Prasad Pandey, a Brahmin leader elected from Purvanchal, as his successor in the assembly.

Samajwadi Party held a meeting of party MLAs to decide the Leader of Opposition. In which the MLAs gave the responsibility of deciding the leader to Akhilesh Yadav. Akhilesh Yadav announced the name of former Assembly Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey. Apart from this, MLA Mehboob Ali has been appointed as Chairman, Kamal Akhtar as Chief Constable and Rakesh Kumar alias RK Verma as Deputy Chief Constable.
Mata Prasad Pandey is an MLA from Etawah seat
Mata Prasad Pandey is an MLA from Itwa seat of Siddharthnagar. He has been the Speaker of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly twice. There was a discussion among the leaders that a leader from backward class would get this post. However, Akhilesh Yadav has made his close leader Mata Prasad Pandey the leader.
Akhilesh Yadav resigned
Akhilesh Yadav himself took over the responsibility as the leader of the opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Who became an MLA after being elected from Karahal seat of Mainpuri. However, in 2024, he contested the Lok Sabha elections from Kannauj seat and won. After this, he has stepped into Delhi politics.
