Mumbai: A special court in Pune has sentenced a 28-year-old man to death for the rape and murder of a girl. The convict's mother was sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment for destroying evidence.
Special POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act) Court Additional Sessions Judge B. P. Kshirsagar did it.
The minor victim was abducted from a village under Maval tehsil of Pune district on August 2, 2022. His body was found the next day on 3 August. It was found that the child had been sexually assaulted.
Police investigation revealed that Tejas Dalvi had kidnapped the girl and taken her to his home, sexually assaulted her and then murdered her. Police said the accused then dumped the girl's body under a tree behind his house and her mother helped him destroy the evidence.
Police arrested both the accused and registered a case against them under relevant sections of the IPC and POCSO Act.
The judge convicted both the accused on separate charges and sentenced Dalvi to death and his mother to seven years of rigorous imprisonment.
On August 19, 2022, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced an assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the victim's family. In this matter, Nirbhaya's guardian said that no help has been received yet.
