The culprit has been sentenced to death in the case of rape and murder of a 10-year-old innocent girl in Jaynagar in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The POCSO court of Baruipur gave this historic verdict within just 62 days. This incident shocked the entire state.

Baruipur court sentenced the convicted Mustakin Sardar to death. Praising this unprecedented decision, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said,
“Conviction and death sentence within a span of just two months is a first in the history of the state. I congratulate the state police and the prosecution team for this achievement. Our government is working on a policy of zero tolerance towards crimes against women and children.”
The girl was murdered after being raped
The incident occurred on October 4, when the 10-year-old girl, who was a class 4 student, had gone for tuition. When the girl did not return home till 8 pm, the family started searching for her. After a lot of search, the girl’s body was found in a nearby canal. Investigation revealed that she was murdered after being raped.
The accused confessed to the crime
Baruipur SP said that a friend of the victim had informed the police that she had seen the accused Mustakin Sardar going on a bicycle with the girl. When the police interrogated the accused, he confessed to his crime. Investigation revealed that the accused was trying to befriend the girl and had kidnapped her on the pretext of feeding her ice cream on the day of the incident.
Anger erupted after the incident
After this heinous crime, there was anger among the local people. People protested in Jaynagar, setting a police post on fire and vandalizing vehicles. This outrage put pressure on the administration to take immediate action.
Mamta Banerjee’s strict stance
After the incident, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had directed the police and judicial system to ensure that the culprit is punished within three months. He said,
“Crime has no religion or caste. Such criminals should be given strict punishment. Our government will ensure that justice is neither delayed nor the victim’s family is denied justice.”
