Valencia, September 12 (HS). Spain defeated Czech Republic 3-0 in the opening match of the Davis Cup group after Carlos Alcaraz and Roberto Bautista won singles matches.
Alcaraz lost the opening set of his match against Tomas Machak 6–7 (3–7) after a tie-break, but Machak suffered an injury in the second set, after which Alcaraz won the second set 6–1 to level the score, however Machak then retired and Alcaraz was declared the winner.
Bautista, on the other hand, celebrated his return to Davis Cup with a 7-6 (1), 6-4 win over Jiri Lehecka, who is 37th in the world rankings and several places above the Spaniard.
Following his victory Bautista celebrated his success in a town close to his hometown, Castellón de la Plana.
“I have experienced some of the best things of my life in my career in this competition, and playing in Valencia is very special. I am very happy to have given Spain its first point,” he said.
In the doubles match, Alcaraz and Marcel Granollers defeated Jakub Mensik and Adam Pavlasek 6-7(2), 6-3, 7-6(2) to give Spain a 3-0 win.
