David Rudisha appointed ambassador of World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24

New Delhi, 16 February (HS). Veteran middle distance Kenyan runner David Rudisha has been appointed as the World Athletics Ambassador for the World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24, to be held from 1-3 March.

Rudisha is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion in the 800 metres. He is familiar with the city of Glasgow as he competed there for the Commonwealth Games in 2014, where he achieved a silver medal.

“I am looking forward to going back to Glasgow for this major event in our calendar,” Rudisha was quoted as saying by World Athletics. I am really excited, sports has made me who I am today and it makes me feel very happy. I am looking forward to meeting the fans and promoting the game.”

Rudisha has many fond memories of competing on UK soil; The most iconic performance of her career – her world record-breaking performance of 1:40.91 – came by winning Olympic gold in London in 2012.

Now 35, Rudisha is very happy to play the role of ambassador for the first global championship in 2024.

Rudisha, who has participated in six global championships during her career and won gold medals in five of them, said, “I feel really honoured. As an athlete, anything I can do to inspire young athletes to win medals on the world stage really makes me feel special.”

“The 2014 Commonwealth Games were very special, I have beautiful memories of my experience in Glasgow,” he said. People were very kind and helpful. I got a silver medal in that race, but it was clear that the crowd supported and cheered every athlete, no matter where they placed.”

The World Indoor Championships, to be held from March 1-3, will feature more than 700 athletes from around 130 countries competing for medals in 26 different events.
