The security agency has urged local people and climbers to stay at least 6 kilometers away from the crater of the volcano. The volcano, approximately 735 meters high, is located in Indonesia's North Sulawesi province and about 95 kilometers northeast of Sam Ratulangi International Airport in the provincial capital Manado.
Amber Suryoko, head of the regional airport authority, said the airport was closed Tuesday morning due to low visibility and the threat of ash hitting aircraft engines.

About 330 thousand people live in Manado, a city near the volcano and according to a recent report, after the eruption, people have to travel with the lights of their vehicles on.
