The problem of pollution in Delhi has once again become serious. A rapid increase has been recorded in the air quality index (AQI) of the capital, due to which level-3 restrictions have been reimposed under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

Increase in pollution levels and withdrawal of GRAP 3

GRAP 4 and GRAP 3 restrictions were lifted in December after air quality improved. But now, due to the sharp increase in air pollution, the Central Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has decided to re-implement GRAP 3.

  • Air Quality Index (AQI):
    • In the last 24 hours, Delhi’s AQI was recorded at 371, which falls in the ‘very poor’ category.
    • According to experts, air quality may deteriorate further due to adverse meteorological conditions.

Sanctions imposed under GRAP 3

Under GRAP 3, strict measures are taken to control pollution levels. These include:

  1. Restrictions on construction and demolition activities:
    • Prohibition on all construction work except essential projects (eg, railways, metro, airport).
  2. Strictness on industrial activities:
    • Ban on operation of polluting industries.
  3. Keep a close eye on vehicles:
    • Ban on operation of old and diesel powered vehicles.
  4. Cleaning of roads:
    • Regular cleaning and water sprinkling to control dust on roads.

due to increase in pollution

  1. Seasonal changes:
    • Due to cold and decreasing wind speed, pollutant particles remain in the atmosphere for a longer time.
  2. Effect of stubble burning:
    • Increase in cases of stubble burning in surrounding states.
  3. Vehicular pollution:
    • Increasing traffic and operation of old vehicles.

The situation may worsen in the coming days

Experts say that air quality may worsen due to adverse weather conditions. If AQI levels increase further, more stringent measures can be taken under GRAP 4.

Suggestions for government and citizens

  1. Government Steps:
    • Strengthening air quality monitoring.
    • To promote public transport.
  2. Tips for citizens:
    • Reduce use of unnecessary vehicles.
    • Wear a mask when you leave the house.
    • Encourage tree planting.
