The Punjab government today told the Supreme Court that farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a fast unto death for over a month, is ready to seek medical assistance if the central government agrees to talks.
A vacation bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia considered the petition of the Punjab government today. In this petition, an appeal was made to give three more days’ time to comply with the Supreme Court’s order of December 20.
The bench gave two more days to the Punjab government to discuss Dallewal’s health and call a meeting of farmers to find a complete solution. The Supreme Court has said that our order should be followed at all costs. The next hearing will be on January 2, 2025.
Punjab Advocate General Gurminder Singh has said that according to the negotiators, a proposal has been given to the Central Government by the farmers that if they are called for talks, then they are ready to take medical help as per their wish.
This is why the state government is asking for more time and is working positively towards compliance with the instructions.
The bench said that as far as negotiations or your legal arrangement are concerned, we will not comment on it. If something happens that is acceptable to both sides and all the stakeholders involved, we will be equally happy.
At present we are only concerned about the implementation of our mandate. If you need more time, we are willing to give more time under special circumstances. Singh agreed with the bench that no comment should be made for talks at this stage and appealed for some time.
