Cyclonic storm Dana, formed in the Bay of Bengal, hit the coast of Odisha and West Bengal at 12 o'clock on Thursday night. The process of hitting the storm was completed around 9 am on Friday morning.
When the cyclone struck, the wind speed was 120 km per hour, which reduced to 10 km per hour after 8.30 hours. Odisha and West Bengal witnessed heavy rains due to strong winds after Cyclone Dana weakened. Dana affected 7 states. Flights and train services partially resumed in a phased manner on Friday. Due to the storm, trees fell at many places and traffic was disrupted. Kutcha houses were destroyed everywhere. There was heavy damage to property. One person died due to the storm in West Bengal. About 2 inches of rain occurred in Bhadrak and Kendrapara of Odisha. Due to the cyclone, 12 lakh people were evacuated from Odisha and Bengal and were taken to relief camps. Due to the impact of the cyclone, heavy to light rains are still occurring in many areas of Odisha and Bengal.
One died in West Bengal
One person died in West Bengal due to the storm. CM Mamata Banerjee said that 2.16 lakh people were evacuated from low-lying areas. Relief material was delivered to everyone. One person also died in the relief camp.
The storm weakened into high pressure
DG Meteorological Department Dr. Mrityunjay Mohapatra said that Cyclone Dana has now weakened and may move towards the north-west. By evening it turned into a high pressure belt. Its intensity reduced. However, due to this, some districts of Odisha and Bengal may still receive heavy to very heavy rains.
Monsoon like rain occurred in seven states
Apart from Odisha and West Bengal, the impact of Cyclone Dana was also felt in Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu. 83,000 to 1 lakh people were moved to relief camps in West Bengal. Bhadrak and Kendrapara of Odisha and East Medinipur and Digha coast of Bengal were greatly affected by the storm. There were stormy waves on the beach. 288 teams of NDRF and fire brigade were deployed in Odisha. The cyclone wreaked havoc in 14 out of 30 coastal districts of Odisha.
300 flights and 552 trains were canceled which partially resumed
Kolkata and Bhubaneswar airports, where 300 flights and 552 trains were canceled on Thursday in view of the storm, resumed partial operations on Friday. Railways has announced that except the canceled trains, other trains will run on time.
