Cyclone formed in Bay of Bengal, strong winds and rain likely, IMD alerts these states

Cyclone warning: The pressure over South West Bengal has turned into a cyclonic storm. The storm is expected to hit the coast between Puducherry and Nellore on the morning of October 17 and is expected to cause heavy rainfall at many places in the south coast and Rayalaseema. Ronanki Kurmanath of the meteorological department of Andhra Pradesh Disaster Management Authority said the cyclone is likely to hit the coast between Puducherry and Nellore by tomorrow morning. It is moving towards north-west direction at a speed of 10 km per hour. There is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain at many places in the South Coast and Rayalaseema. There is a possibility of heavy rain in some areas. The wind is blowing on the coast. The wind speed is likely to be 40-60 km per hour.

Heavy rain in Chennai and Tamil Nadu

Due to heavy rains in Chennai and parts of Tamil Nadu, traffic came to a complete standstill in the city. Residential areas and roads were flooded with knee-deep water, severely affecting daily life. Torrential rains caused traffic jams, disrupted public transport services and led to the cancellation of several domestic flights. Southern Railway announced cancellation of four express trains including Chennai Central-Mysore Kaveri Express due to water bombing.

Many trains were diverted, some were stopped before Chennai Central Railway Station. The original station was shifted to suburban Avadi for some trains. Many domestic flights were canceled due to insufficient passengers.

IMD issued alert

IMD has issued an alert that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu and Chennai districts with very heavy falls at one or two places. Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said Disaster Response Force personnel have been deployed in Bengaluru following the forecast of heavy rain. We are deploying another 40 staff to be ready for any needs. We have kept fire and emergency services on standby for immediate action.

Announcement of helpline number

The city civic body Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has set up round-the-clock special control rooms in eight areas and also launched a helpline number (1533) to report rain-related problems.
