Mumbai – A case has been registered against a contractor and a structural consultant in connection with the collapse of the 35-feet high statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi eight months ago at the Rajkot Fort in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had unveiled a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Rajkot Fort in Malvan taluka of Sindhudurg on Navy Day (December 4) last year. The statue collapsed yesterday at 1 pm amid heavy rains and strong winds.
This incident has created an embarrassing situation for the state government led by Eknath Shinde. Shinde, who has come under fire from opposition parties, has said that the statue was designed and built by the Navy and the government was not involved in it in any way.
Then a complaint was lodged by the Assistant Engineer of Public Works Department (PWD) at Malavan police station late on Monday evening. An official said that as alleged by the complainant, contractor Jaydeep Apte and structural consultant Chetan Patil were responsible for the collapse of the statue. In such a situation, on the basis of his complaint, a crime has been registered against both of them under various sections of the Indian Judicial Code. It is being told that sections like attempt to murder an innocent person, endangering the life of others, attempt to murder, fraud have been imposed in it.
Local citizens and tourists had earlier raised concerns about the condition of the statue. No necessary action was taken on the warning issued by the Assistant Engineer of Public Works Department, Malvan on August 20.
In this regard, the Public Works Department says that there was a danger due to the use of broken nuts and bolts in the construction of the statue and warnings were also ignored.
The steel used to make the statue had rusted. Sindhudurg Palak Pradhan Ravindra Chavan said that the Public Works Department had informed the naval authorities about the rusting of the statue and had also requested action in this regard.
Yesterday, there was a lot of discussion on who made this statue. After claiming that the Public Works Department had installed the statue, Thackeray group MLA Vaibhav Naik along with his workers vandalised the PWD office in Malvan. However, the state government claimed that the Navy was responsible for the statue.
Guardian Minister Ravindra Chavan claimed that the entire operation and maintenance of the statue is the responsibility of the Navy.
