Melbourne, September 19 (HS). Former Sri Lankan cricketer Duleep Samaraweera has been banned from holding any position with Cricket Australia or any state or territory association (including any W/BBL team) for 20 years after being found guilty of a serious breach of the code of conduct. Cricket Australia (CA) gave this information on Thursday.

The Conduct Commission found that Samaraweera had behaved inappropriately, which was a breach of Article 2.23 of CA's Code of Conduct. The allegations of inappropriate conduct arose while Samaraweera was serving as the head coach at Cricket Victoria (CV), a position he resigned from in May this year after serving for just two weeks.

Cricket Victoria CEO Nick Cummins said at the time of Samaraweera's resignation, “During the recruitment process, Duleep expressed a desire to make a specific coaching appointment in our support team. Due to our internal policies, that appointment was not possible. After further discussions, Duleep decided he would not like to continue in this role.”

In a release on Thursday, Cricket Australia further said, “The CA Integrity Department investigates complaints brought to it under the Integrity Code and policies that also apply to state and territory associations. The Conduct Commission hears matters referred to it by CA Integrity. CA and CV are committed to providing a safe environment for all players and staff and the welfare of victims of abuse is of paramount importance.”

Samaraweera played seven Tests and five T20Is in his international career from 1993 to 1995.
