London, July 10 (HS). Former Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle United forward Craig Bellamy was appointed the new coach of the Wales national team on Tuesday. 44-year-old Bellamy has signed a four-year contract until 2028.
He replaces Robert Page, who was sacked in June following a poor run of results.
“It is an incredible honour for me to be given the opportunity to lead my country and it is the proudest moment of my career,” said Bellamy, who scored 19 goals in 78 appearances for Wales and captained the country between 2007-2010.
Bellamy, who previously coached the first team at Burnley and took on the role as caretaker head coach after Vincent Kompany left to join Bayern Munich, said: “It has always been my dream to become Cymru (Wales) head coach and I am up for the challenge, I give my full commitment to developing this squad and I am looking forward to bringing continued success to Welsh football. I can’t wait to get started.”
Bellamy's first match will be the UEFA Nations League tie against Turkiye on 6 September.
