The government has cracked down on these fraudsters and has blacklisted the 'major units' behind the SMS headers used to send more than 10 thousand fraudulent messages in the last three months.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Ministry of Communications said that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has taken this decisive action to protect citizens from potential SMS fraud through the 'Sanchar Saathi' initiative. According to DoT, by blacklisting these organizations, potential harassment of citizens has been prevented. Along with this, it has reiterated its commitment to protect citizens against cyber crime.
According to the ministry, more than 10 thousand fraudulent messages were sent using these eight headers in the last three months. The major organizations owning these eight SMS headers have been blacklisted. At the same time, all 73 SMS headers and 1,522 SMS content templates owned by these major organizations have also been blacklisted. Now none of these major organizations, SMS headers or templates can be used to send SMS.
It is worth mentioning that the business or legal entities that send commercial messages to mobile customers via SMS are called 'principal entity' in the language of the telecom world. At the same time, header means a specific series allocated to the 'principal entity' for sending commercial communication, which contains both numbers and letters.
