Following the serious law and order crisis in Baruipur town under South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, the state administration has taken a major political and legal action. The police have arrested senior Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Laheq Ali (Laheq Khan) in connection with the violent reaction and mob lynching that erupted after the alleged gang rape and brutal murder of a minor girl in Suryapur area. Lahek Ali has been the official candidate of the Left alliance from Baruipur West seat in the West Bengal Assembly elections held earlier this year.

There was anger in Suryapur Haat: After the death of a minor, a young man was killed by a furious mob.

This whole controversy started on July 4, when a 14-year-old minor girl suddenly went missing. The next day i.e. on July 5, the mutilated body of the girl was recovered from a local pond in Suryapur Haat area, after which tension spread in the entire area. The victim’s family alleged that the girl was brutally murdered after being gang-raped. Angered by this incident, the local residents and protesters became furious and started a serious Rail Roko movement by burning tires on the roads and halting the traffic. Amidst this chaos, a young man named Indrajit Mandal was brutally beaten to death by an angry mob on suspicion of being involved in a crime. Police claim that former election candidate Lahek Ali had instigated the mob to commit this horrific violence.

Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari met the victims: assured of justice and government assistance

On Saturday, West Bengal Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari himself visited Baruipur. After reaching there, he met face to face with the bereaved family of the deceased girl who was the victim of gang rape and then the family of Indrajit Mandal who was the victim of mob lynching. While consoling both the victim families, the Chief Minister gave official assurance of providing all possible financial and social assistance from the state government. Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister said in strong words, “We cannot bring that innocent youth back, but our government has taken full responsibility of his family. His murderers will be brought under the ambit of the law and given the strictest punishment.” He also alleged that some defeated political elements had sponsored this communal and social violence to regain their lost ground.

Main accused caught from India-Bangladesh border: New police post ready in just 4 days

Considering the sensitivity of the matter, the state intelligence and investigative police quickly laid a technical trap. Acting on the basis of video footage and digital evidence, the police nabbed all the main suspects involved in the incident from Bakkhali, Digha and Basirhat located near the India-Bangladesh border, from where they were trying to escape across the border. Along with this, Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari also inaugurated a modern police post in Suryapur, accepting the demand regarding security of the local public and the victim’s family. This police post has been constructed and activated within a record time of just four days on the special orders of the government, so that such violent recurrence can be prevented in future.
