Mumbai: A special court in Pune has issued summons to Rahul Gandhi to appear on October 23 in a criminal defamation case filed by the great-grandson of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, who had accused him of making objectionable statements against Hindutva ideology.

Last year, Savarkar's great-grandson Satyaki Savarkar had filed a complaint in a Pune court. Last month, the case was transferred from the Judicial Magistrate First Class (FMFC) court to a special court.

The special court of Joint Civil Judge and Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Amol Shinde has issued summons to Gandhi to appear in the court on October 23 to answer the charges against him, the prosecutor's counsel said.

Satyaki alleged in the complaint that in a speech in London in March 2023, Gandhi had claimed that VD Savarkar had written in his book that five to six of his friends had once killed a Muslim and he was happy with it. .

Satyaki said that no such incident happened and Savarkar did not write anything like this anywhere. He alleged that Gandhi's allegations were false and fabricated. The court asked the police to investigate the allegation and submit the report. The police investigated and said that there were prima facie facts in the complaint.
