Country's coal production increased by seven percent to 370 million tonnes in April-August | News India

New Delhi, 27 August (HS). The country's coal production increased by 7.12 percent to 370 million tonnes i.e. 37 crore 6.7 lakh tonnes between April and August 25 in the financial year 2024-25. During the same period of the last financial year, the production of coal was 34 crore 60.2 lakh tonnes.

The Ministry of Coal said in a statement issued on Tuesday that there has been an increase in overall coal production till August 25, 2024. According to the ministry, in the current financial year, the cumulative coal production till August 25, 2024 has increased to 37 crore 6.7 lakh tonnes as compared to 34 crore 60.2 lakh tonnes during the same period of financial year 2023-24. This is a significant increase of 7.12 percent.

According to the ministry, the total coal dispatch has also seen a significant increase during April to August 25 in the financial year 2024-25. The total coal lifting till August 25, 2024 was 39 crore 70.6 lakh tonnes, which is an increase of 5.48 per cent year-on-year. Coal dispatch to the power sector increased from 31 crore 34.4 lakh tonnes in the same period of the previous financial year to 32 crore 59.7 lakh tonnes. This increase has been achieved despite the huge initial storage of 47 MT in TPPs till April 01, 24.

The Ministry of Coal said that this ensures a continuous supply of coal to meet the energy needs of the power sector. According to the statement, the total coal stock position including mines, thermal power plants and mines in transit has reached 12 crore 15.7 lakh tonnes as on August 25, 2024. This is a substantial increase of 36.2 per cent as compared to the stock of 8 crore 92.8 lakh tonnes in the same period of the last financial year.

Additionally, the coal stock at TPP (DCB) as on 25th August, 2024 is 37.55 MT as compared to 29.47 MT in the previous fiscal, showing a significant increase of about 27.41%. This high coal stock position reflects the commitment of the Ministry of Coal to maintain adequate supply of coal. It underlines the efforts of the Ministry to ensure a reliable energy supply.
