Miami, July 15 (HS). The Copa America final between Argentina and Colombia was delayed on Sunday (local time) after hundreds of fans broke through security gates at the Hard Rock Stadium before the scheduled start time.
Videos posted on social media showed fans jumping over barriers and dodging police and security staff near the southwest entrance of the venue in Miami Gardens. Screams were heard and some could be seen receiving medical treatment in the sweltering Florida heat.
“We inform that those who do not have tickets will not be able to enter the stadium. When entry is allowed again, only those who have purchased tickets will be able to enter,” the South American Football Confederation said on social media.
The Miami-Dade County Police Department issued a statement condemning the incidents.
“We are asking everyone to be patient and follow the rules set forth by our officers and Hard Rock Stadium personnel. We are actively working with Hard Rock Stadium to ensure a safe environment for all attendees. Unruly behavior will result in you being ejected or arrested,” the statement said.
Over 65,000 spectators were expected to attend the final match of the tournament.
