Controversy over sending condoms with New Year invitation in Pune pub

Mumbai: A popular restaurant-pub in Pune has created a major controversy by distributing condoms and ORS packets (dehydration relief fluids) along with invitations to a ‘New Year celebration party’. Such an action by a pub in a city considered to be an educational and cultural hub has sparked outrage among some locals.

A pub in Mundwa, Pune has reportedly sent packets of condoms and ORS (oral rehydration solution) to its regular customers along with invitations to the celebration.

A leader of Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress has sent a complaint to the Pune Police Commissioner saying that this action of the pub is not appropriate keeping in mind the educational and entrepreneurial values ​​of the city. It has been said in the police complaint that a wrong example is being set for the youth. Strict action has been requested against the pub. In their response, the pub responded that their theme for 2025 was ‘Safety and Celebration’ and the gift bags sent to invited guests included essential party items such as noise makers and confetti bombs to take home if necessary. Phone number etc. of the nominated driver is also included.

Pune Police has started investigating the matter and is recording the statements of the people who received the gift bags. A senior official said that distributing condoms is not a violation of any law. Condoms were included in the gift bags to promote safe and responsible behavior and the move is in line with the goals of the AIDS Control Organization (NACO), a department of the health ministry of the central government.
