The controversy regarding the place of cremation of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is deepening. His funeral has been planned to be held at Nigam Bodh Ghat, but the Congress Party has opposed the decision. The party believes that performing the last rites of such a big personality at Nigam Bodh Ghat would not be in keeping with his honour.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard. He has requested that the last rites of the late former Prime Minister should be performed at a place where his memorial can also be established. Congress shared this letter on social media and wrote, “Today, Congress President Shri @kharge, by talking to the Prime Minister and the Home Minister on phone and writing a letter, has strongly requested that the last rites of Sardar Manmohan Singh, the son of India, be performed. And setting up a memorial would be a true tribute to him.”

Congress Working Committee’s condolence message

The Congress Working Committee expressed deep condolence on the demise of Dr. Manmohan Singh and said that the country has lost a true statesman whose life and works provided direction to the future of India. This proposal was passed in the meeting chaired by Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday. Many senior leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal, Jairam Ramesh attended the meeting.

The resolution said, “The Congress Working Committee expresses its condolences on the demise of Dr. Manmohan Singh. His life and contribution played an important role in changing the social, economic and political landscape of India.”

Contribution of Dr. Manmohan Singh

Recalling the contribution of Dr. Singh, the Working Committee said that as the Finance Minister in the 1990s, he laid the foundation of India’s economic liberalization. His visionary policy decisions rescued the country from economic crisis and opened doors to global markets. The reforms undertaken by him made India one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

As Prime Minister, Dr. Singh took the country forward on the path of peace, stability and economic development. He took strategic steps to keep India safe during the global financial crisis of 2008. During his tenure, India not only strengthened its identity on the global stage, but also implemented many historic laws and policies, which proved to be milestones for social and economic progress.

Dr. Singh’s legacy

The Congress Working Committee remembered Dr. Singh as a sensitive, visionary and reformist leader whose contribution was invaluable in shaping the policies and direction of India. Also paid tribute to him as a respected educationist and eminent personality in the field of economics.
