You will start imitating them, you will sing songs in hotels and restaurants.
23-year-old contestant Lakshya Mehta arrived on the show and tried to impress the judges with two songs accompanied by the guitar. These two songs were – 'Tum Kya Mile…' and 'Paheli Nazar Mein…' When Lakshya started singing the song, the judges felt that he was trying to imitate the singers who had sung these songs.
You must be singing in hotels and restaurants…
Vishal interrupted Lakshya's audition and said, 'You are putting expressions of many singers in your songs, first with Arijit Singh, then with Atif Aslam… You can sing well, but you do not sing your own songs. This is 'Indian Idol' isn't it… this is where idols come from, here you cannot move ahead by copying. Don't try to copy them. He is a very big artist. The day you start imitating them, you will be singing songs in hotels and restaurants.
People praise it but…
He further said, 'You perform in public, right? Often at shows, when you imitate other artists, you get applause from the audience because they want to hear the song because they know it. But until you create your own identity. You will never become a star, you will never become an Indian Idol by singing in someone else's style. However, composer Vishal Dadlani said that he liked Amritsar's Lakshya's singing ability, but was disappointed by his attempts to imitate other singers.
