Mumbai: The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has proposed to the government to allow export of one million tonnes of sugar in the current sugar season, keeping in mind the possibility of large-scale supply at the end of the 2023-24 season.
An ISMA statement said that in the current year's sugar season till March, 302.20 lakh tonnes of sugar was produced, while in last year's sugar season till the end of March, 300.77 lakh tonnes of sugar was produced.
Sugar season runs from October to September. The government currently controls the export of sugar to control the price of sugar domestically.
In mid-March, ISMA estimated net sugar production for the current season at 323 lakh tonnes. 17 lakh tonnes of sugar will be diverted for ethanol production. Keeping this fact in mind, the government has been requested to allow export of 10 million tonnes of sugar, ISMA sources said.
The net production figure in last year's sugar season was 32.8 million tonnes. 38 lakh tonnes of sugar was made available for ethanol.
Given that the monsoon of 2024 is expected to be normal, crushing operations are also expected to be normal in the coming season. The annual consumption of sugar in the country is about 2.50 crore tonnes.
