On Tuesday, Congress workers demonstrated vigorously in the Collectorate premises located at the district headquarters regarding this matter. The party delegation submitted a memorandum of demands addressed to the Governor on this issue to ADM City.
After submitting the memorandum, Metropolitan Congress President Raghavendra Choubey said that by changing the name of Dr. Sampurnanand Sports Stadium, the cultural heritage of Kashi is being insulted. Removing the name of Dr. Sampurnanand right after the inauguration of the stadium is not only objectionable, but it is also an insult to Kashi and its rich tradition. Removing the name of a popular politician and scholar like Sampurnanand is an insult to the people of Kashi and their ideas. Besides, it is also an insult to the scholarly tradition of Kashi and the freedom fighters. District President Rajeshwar Patel, Seva Dal State President Pramod Pandey etc. participated in the protest. On the other hand, on the allegation of changing the name of Dr. Sampurnanand Sports Stadium, Divisional Commissioner Kaushalraj Sharma said that only the building has been named Varanasi Sports Stadium. Sigra Sports Stadium is named after Dr. Sampurnanand. Only the building inside has been named Varanasi Sports Complex. He said that some people are creating confusion among the people of Kashi that the name of Sigra Stadium has been changed.
