Congress gave its first reaction on the approval of One Nation One Election proposal | News India

After the Modi cabinet approved the One Nation One Election proposal, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has reacted. He said, “This is not practical, it does not work. This is meant to divert attention.”

On Wednesday, September 18, the Cabinet approved the proposal of 'One Nation One Election'. The aim of which is to conduct Lok Sabha and state assembly elections at the same time. This proposal has been approved on the basis of the recommendation of the Kovind Committee. The chairman of this committee is former President Ram Nath Kovind. The report was prepared in 191 days and has 18,626 pages of recommendations.

BJP's retort on Congress's response

On Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's remarks on One Nation One Election, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, the opposition may start feeling internal pressure as more than 80% of the respondents who responded during the consultation process have given their positive support, especially the youth. They are, they are in favour of it.

What is one nation one election?

The One Nation One Election report was submitted to President Draupadi Murmu in March this year. Regarding the report, the committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind has said that this report has been prepared after talking to all the parties, experts and researchers.

The Kovind Committee report has given recommendations related to the issue of holding municipal and panchayat elections along with Lok Sabha and assembly elections. The report said that 47 political parties shared their views with the committee, out of which 32 political parties were in support of 'one nation one election'.

Earlier also elections were held simultaneously

After the first general election in India, Lok Sabha and Assembly elections were held simultaneously till 1967. It is being said in favour that by holding elections once, the expenditure on elections will also be reduced. Apart from this, government employees will also get relief from election related duties and they will be able to concentrate on departmental work.
