Chandigarh: A delegation led by opposition leader Pratap Singh Bajwa sent a memorandum to the state election commissioner on Saturday regarding the problems being faced by potential candidates in view of the Panchayat elections. Opposition leader Pratap Singh Bajwa said that lower level officials are deliberately trying to harm the potential candidates of the opposition party. Candidates are being harassed so that they cannot file their nomination papers on time. Bajwa said in the demand letter given to the Election Commissioner that the candidates wishing to contest the Panchayat elections to be held on October 15 are facing problems regarding ward closure notification, voter list (January 1, 2024). Similarly, there is confusion regarding the unnecessary demand of making new certificates by the Scheduled Caste people.
Former ministers Balbir Singh Sidhu, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa and other Congress leaders were present with Bajwa. Bajwa requested the Election Commissioner that to maintain people's faith in democracy, it is necessary to ensure a transparent process for a fair democracy. Urgent reforms were urged to protect voters' rights and ensure a level playing field for all candidates. Bajwa said that the final voter lists were not being displayed on the notice boards of BDPO (Block Development and Panchayat Officer) offices. Similarly, voter lists are also not being given to the candidates. Due to which he is facing problems, Bajwa has demanded the State Election Commissioner to solve all these problems as soon as possible.
