Congress delegation meets Chief Electoral Officer, demands holding of by-elections

Dehradun, March 22 (HS). The Uttarakhand Congress delegation met Chief Electoral Officer Dr. BVRC Purushottam on Friday and submitted a memorandum. The memorandum demands holding of by-elections in Mangalore Assembly constituency.

Chief spokesperson of Uttarakhand Congress, Garima Mehra Dasauni said that Late. The election of Sarwat Karim Ansari, who was elected MLA to the fifth Uttarakhand Assembly from 33-Mangalore Assembly constituency, was challenged in the High Court by Qazi Nizamuddin. After the death of Sarwat Karim Ansari, an application for withdrawal was given in the month of November itself. Dasouni said that the High Court's order on this matter was issued yesterday, in which it has been accepted to withdraw the petition. Since Sarwat Karim Ansari passed away on 30 October 2023. His demise resulted in a casual vacancy arising as per Section 150 of the RP Act 1951, which is required to be filled as per Section 151-A within six months i.e. 30th April 2024. The delegation requested the Chief Electoral Officer to hold by-elections for Mangalore and Badrinath constituencies as soon as possible.

The delegation told the Chief Electoral Officer that on 30 April 2024, Late. It will be six months since the death of Sarbat Karim Ansari. The said constituency, which has no representation from 30 October 2023, should make efforts to get its elected representative in the Uttarakhand Assembly.
