Congo's interior minister said, 'The rest of the prisoners died in the incident due to being pushed or suffocated.' He said that the prison's administrative building, its food depot and a hospital also caught fire, injuring about 59 people. In a statement released through video, he said, 'Many people lost their lives and there was a lot of damage while trying to escape from Makala Central Jail.' Earlier, a prison official had said that not a single prisoner managed to escape. He also said that those who tried to escape were killed. The government is investigating the incident.
