Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has now arrived in India. Two cases of the virus have been confirmed in Karnataka, the first of which was reported in Bengaluru on Monday. This virus, which was earlier reported to be spreading rapidly in China, has now become a topic of discussion in many states of India like Delhi and Maharashtra. An advisory regarding this has also been issued in these states.
First case: 8 month old child infected
- Infected child:
- An 8-month-old child is undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Bengaluru.
- The health department has confirmed that the child’s medical test was found to be HMPV positive.
- The special thing is that the child has no travel history, which indicates local infection.
- Information given to the Union Health Ministry:
- The Karnataka Health Department has sent the report of the child’s infection to the Health Ministry.
- However, it is not yet clear whether this is the same HMPV strain that is spreading in China.
Government increased vigilance
In view of the outbreak of HMPV in China, India has also increased vigilance.
- Monitoring and Testing:
- The number of laboratories testing HMPV will be increased.
- The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will monitor trends in HMPV infection throughout the year.
- Coordination with WHO:
- WHO has been requested to share updated information in a timely manner.
- Strict monitoring of infection:
- The government is monitoring the situation through all available means.
