A new phase of violence against minority Hindus has started in Bangladesh. The Hindu community was relatively safe during Sheikh Hasina’s government, but the situation changed after she left the post. After Muhammad Yunus took over the leadership of the interim government, the incidents of attacks on Hindus increased rapidly. The situation became so dire that being a Hindu became a crime. The echo of these atrocities was heard all over the world, but the government of Bangladesh maintained silence.
After strong opposition and interference from India, the Bangladesh government finally had to accept the truth. Bangladesh has admitted to 88 incidents of violence against minorities after the removal of Sheikh Hasina.
Round of violence after Sheikh Hasina’s departure
The Bangladesh government on Tuesday admitted that 88 incidents of communal violence, mainly targeting Hindus, took place after the ouster of then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August, according to news agency PTI. However, the new government of Bangladesh did not fail to call this acceptance as its achievement.
Shafiqul Alam, press secretary of the interim government of Muhammad Yunus, claimed that 70 people have been arrested so far in these incidents.
Bangladesh’s confession after India’s intervention
The government of Bangladesh accepted this truth when India protested in a strong tone. India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met the Bangladeshi leadership and expressed concern over the attacks on minorities. He made Bangladesh aware of India’s seriousness regarding the security and welfare of Hindus.
Shafikul Alam told reporters that between August 5 and October 22, 88 cases were registered against Hindus. After India’s warning, Bangladesh was forced to make these figures public.
Possibility of new arrests
According to Press Secretary Shafikul Alam, investigation into the cases of violence is still going on. He said the number of new cases and arrests may increase. New incidents of violence have been reported especially in North-East Sunamganj, Central Ghazipur and other areas.
Shafiqul Alam also said that in some cases the victims may have connections to the previous ruling party. This statement makes it clear that the Yunus government is trying to downplay the seriousness of the matter.
Questions on the claims of Yunus government
The government of Muhammad Yunus is trying to deny the seriousness of the attacks on Hindus. The government claims that, with a few exceptions, attacks were not carried out on the basis of religious belief. But the reality is that incidents of atrocities on Hindus have increased.
Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam also said that details of the incidents after October 22 would be released soon. However, it is clear from the policies and rhetoric of the Yunus government that bitterness has increased in the relations between India and Bangladesh.
Tension in India-Bangladesh relations
Under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh has weakened its relations with India. While there were cordial relations between the two countries during Sheikh Hasina’s government, these relations have become tense since the Yunus government came to power. Despite strong warnings from India, the indifference and carelessness of the Bangladesh government towards Hindus has worsened the situation.
Question on security of Hindus
Serious questions are now being raised regarding the security of the Hindu community in Bangladesh. The Hindu community had received security during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, but now the threat to their life and property has increased.
India has made it clear that the security of minorities is its priority and the Bangladesh government is expected to take concrete steps on this issue.
