Commitment to maintain confidence in the judiciary

Supreme Court judge Justice CT Ravikumar on Friday reiterated his responsibility and commitment towards the judiciary after his retirement. He said that he will not do anything that will lose public confidence in the judiciary.

Justice Ravikumar said at his retirement ceremony, “When I took oath as a judge, I took a pledge that I would maintain the dignity of the judiciary. Now even after retirement, I am committed to fully fulfill this promise.”

Respect and civic duty of the judiciary

Describing the judiciary as the guardian of law, Justice Ravikumar said that he will always maintain the respect for this institution. He said,

“I will respect the dignity of the judiciary and its principles as a law-abiding citizen.”

In his address, he said that this moment of saying goodbye is satisfying for him, but it depends on the legal community and the public how they judge his tenure.

Justice Ravikumar described his professional life as a mixture of sweet and bitter experiences. He said,

“I had many bitter and better experiences in the profession, which helped me to become a competent judge.”

Harmony of Law, Bar and Bench

Speaking on various aspects of the justice process, Justice Ravikumar said:

  • Rule of law: Law is the path to justice, and adherence to law ensures the delivery of justice.
  • Importance of Role:
    • Bar and Bench were described as drivers, who together work to bring the victims to justice.
    • He said that if everyone plays their role with full honesty, then it is possible to guarantee justice.

Need for public discussion and constructive criticism

Underscoring the importance of discussion and criticism of Supreme Court decisions, Justice Ravikumar said,

“There should be constructive discussion on any decision of public importance. “Criticism paves the way for improvement.”

Judicial approach and role of lawyers

He combined the role of judge and lawyer with that of a physician. He said,

“When a complainant comes to the court, it is like a doctor diagnosing the problem. “The lawyer has to decide what solution is best for the client.”
