Cold wave alert in many states including Jammu and Kashmir, weather becomes pleasant due to snowfall

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert of cold wave in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and other northern states. Due to fresh snowfall, the cold has increased in the hilly areas, while a thick blanket of snow has spread in many areas. This season may be pleasant for tourists, but it has brought challenges for local residents.

Mercury drops in Jammu and Kashmir, pleasant weather after fresh snowfall

Fresh snowfall occurred in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, December 28, 2024, leaving a white blanket across the region.

• snowfall in srinagar: Heavy snowfall was recorded in Srinagar including Doda and Baramulla. Only whiteness is visible far and wide in Doda district.
• increase in tourism: The weather has become pleasant due to snowfall, due to which there has been a huge increase in the inflow of tourists.

According to ANI report, IMD has issued orange alert for Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Uttarakhand.

• snowfall statistics: In Himachal’s Manali and Lahaul-Spiti, snowfall has covered the entire area in white sheets.
• freezing of dal lake: Srinagar’s famous Dal Lake has completely frozen, showing the intensity of winter.

Road condition and preparation of administration

• cleaning campaign: Due to snowfall in Doda, Baramulla and Kathua, traffic was disrupted at night due to accumulation of snow on the roads.
• efforts to open roads: Doda DC Harvinder Singh informed that Border Roads Organization (BRO) has been deployed for the work of clearing the roads.
• appeal for caution: The administration has appealed to tourists and local residents to drive carefully.

Impact of Western Disturbance: IMD’s warning

IMD has warned of light rain and snowfall between 1 and 6 January 2025 due to the new western disturbance.

• Chance of heavy snowfall: Cold wave conditions will prevail in the western Himalayan region on 30 and 31 December.
• challenging days ahead: Severe cold wave and rain may occur in many parts of North India in the next 4 days.

Impact in Punjab and Haryana also

The outbreak of cold wave and rain in Punjab and Haryana is expected to continue for the next 6 days.
