Chandigarh: Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has sought the intervention of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar to immediately conduct the Senate elections of Panjab University, Chandigarh.

In a letter to the Vice President, Bhagwant Mann said that despite the tenure of the current Senate ending on 31 October 2024, Senate elections have not been announced in Panjab University, which is a very serious and emotional issue for the state. He said that Punjab University was constituted under the Punjab University Act, 1947 (Act 7 of 1947) and was established in 1947 to compensate for the loss suffered by Punjab due to the main university being located in Lahore after the partition of the country. Was. Mann said that after the partition of the state in 1966, the Punjab Reorganization Act 1966 retained its status, which meant that the university would continue to function as before and areas included in present-day Punjab would be included under its jurisdiction.

The Chief Minister said that since then Panjab University, Chandigarh has been a part of the emotional, cultural, literary and rich heritage of the state. He said that since the establishment of the university, its Senate has been constituted every four years and its members have been elected through the process of public election. Mann said that it is surprising that Senate elections were not held this year, whereas for the last six decades these elections have been held regularly in the months of August-September of any year.

The Chief Minister said the failure to hold elections to the University Senate, whose current term ends on October 31, has not only disappointed the stakeholders but is also a violation of good governance and law. He said there is a lot of protest among teachers, professionals, technical members, university graduates and representatives of various constituencies over the delay in the Senate elections.
