CJP Protest: Heavy security in Delhi, 46 metro stations closed! Abhijeet Deepke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka in custody

Police and security agencies have taken a tough stance regarding the proposed protest of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) in the national capital Delhi. Amid plans to march towards Jantar Mantar and Lutyens’ Delhi, Delhi Police has taken into custody the key organizers and activists of the protest – Abhijeet Deepke, investigative journalists and activists Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, while preparing a massive security cordon in the capital. To maintain law and order and in view of the sensitivity of the capital, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), on the advice of the police, has completely closed the entry and exit gates of 46 metro stations of Central Delhi, due to which the entire Delhi seems to be transformed into a cantonment on weekends.

Even before the protesters gathered in Lutyens Zone on Saturday morning, the Special Cell of Delhi Police and teams of local police stations started coordinated action:

  • Action against Abhijeet Deepke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka: Activist Abhijeet Deepke, journalists Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, who were leading the protest on social media and on the ground, were taken into preventive detention near their residences and protest sites.

  • Leaders taken to unknown locations: According to police officials, this action has been taken in an attempt to violate Section 144 and call unauthorized gathering in sensitive areas without administrative permission. The detained leaders have been kept in different police stations to prevent mobilization.

Following inputs from Delhi Police, DMRC on Saturday revised its operational advisory, closing entry and exit for general passengers at 46 sensitive metro stations:

  • Major stations affected: The gates of major stations like Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Patel Chowk, Udyog Bhawan, Janpath, Mandi House, Barakhamba Road, Lok Kalyan Marg, Delhi Gate and ITO have been completely sealed.

  • Interchange only: Interchange facilities are being provided to passengers at junctions like Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat, but no passenger is allowed to exit the station.

  • Intensive Checking: At the open outstation stations, CISF is conducting thorough search of each passenger’s luggage using metal detectors and additional squads.

Three-tier concrete barricades and barbed wire have been installed at Parliament House Complex, India Gate, Duty Path, Home Ministry and all major routes leading to Jantar Mantar:

  • CRPF and RAF deployment: More than 50 additional companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF) and CRPF have been deployed along with Delhi Police.

  • Water cannon and tear gas squads ready: Anti-riot vehicles, Vajra vehicles, water cannons and tear gas squads are on alert mode at the intersections.

  • Drone surveillance: Every suspicious activity is being monitored through drone cameras in the sky of Central Delhi.

Police have imposed strict blockade at all interstate borders to prevent protesters from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh from entering Delhi:

  • Border points sealed: Intensive search of every bus, taxi and private vehicle is being done at Noida-Delhi Chilla Border, Ghazipur, Kalindi Kunj, DND Flyover, Badarpur, Singhu and Tikri Border.

  • Traffic standstill: Due to this strict investigation, there has been a massive traffic jam of 5 to 10 kilometers long on the routes of Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad adjacent to Delhi. Essential services, ambulances and passengers going to the airport are facing huge problems.

Senior Delhi Police officials made it clear in the press briefing that no one will be allowed to violate law or disrupt public order in the national capital. Police have appealed to citizens to use alternative routes in Lutyens’ Delhi, ignore rumors being spread on social media and follow the safety instructions of the police administration. Security alert will continue in New Delhi area till the situation becomes normal.
